Partitioning a sample using binary-type questions with ternary feedback

چکیده
The problem is to find the largest observation (or the q largest observations) in a random sample of size n by asking binary-type questions of people (or items) in the sample. At each stage of the search, a threshold is calculated and a binary-type question is posed to each member of the sample. This question is of the form “Is your Observation greater than the threshold?” The threshold is determined from answers given to the previous questions, and no exact data is ever collected, Le., no member is asked to explicitly provide his observation. Arrow, Pesotchinsky, and Sobel (APS) calculated the optimal threshold sequence for two different objectives: i) minimize the average number of questions required for a solution, and ii) maximize the probability of solving the problem in, at most, r questions. APS have assumed that the number of respondents in the affirmative at each stage of the search is exactly known (this is the case of “full feedback”). There exist applications (e&, multiuser communications) where the number of affirmative answers is only known to be one member of the set {O, 1, more than l} (“ternary feedback”). For these applications, we calculate exactly the optimal thresholds, in the sense of maximizing the probability of getting precisely one a“ative answer to the next binary question. We find that, with ternary feedback, the expected number of questions needed to terminate the search is -2.445 (for large n). Using the same objective function, APS calculated 2.44144 for full feedback. Application of the threshold-calculation procedure is demonstrated in resolution of packet collisions over multiuser communication channel. At any instant, the procedure maximizes the probability of successful packet transmission during the next time slot.

Experimental and Theoretical Study of Phase Equilibria in Aqueous Mixtures of Lactic Acid with Benzyl Alcohol and p-Xylene at Various Temperatures
Liquid-liquid equilibria for the (water + lactic acid + benzyl alcohol or p-xylene) ternary systems were investigated at atmospheric pressure and in the temperature range from 298.15-318.15 K. The studied systems exhibit two types of liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) behavior. The system consisting of benzyl alcohol displays type-1 LLE behavior, while a type-2 behavior is exhibited by th...
متن کاملWeakly prime ternary subsemimodules of ternary semimodules
In this paper we introduce the concept of weakly prime ternary subsemimodules of a ternary semimodule over a ternary semiring and obtain some characterizations of weakly prime ternary subsemimodules. We prove that if $N$ is a weakly prime subtractive ternary subsemimodule of a ternary $R$-semimodule $M$, then either $N$ is a prime ternary subsemimodule or $(N : M)(N : M)N = 0$. If $N$ is a $Q$-...
متن کاملLiquid-Liquid Equilibrium for the Ternary Systems of Solvent+ m/o/p-Cresol+Water: Thermodynamic Modeling
In this study, NRTL and UNIQUAC thermodynamic models were used to predict the composition of ternary mixtures of solvents+ m/o/p-cresol+ water in organic and aqueous phases. Various solvents are used for the separation of cresols from water. In this study, methyl propyl ketone, methyl isopropyl ketone, methyl butyl ketone, and methyl isobutyl ketone solvents were investigated. Intermolecular in...
متن کاملBinary Effect of Fly Ash and Palm Oil Fuel Ash on Heat of Hydration Aerated Concrete
The binary effect of pulverized fuel ash (PFA) and palm oil fuel ash (POFA) on heat of hydration of aerated concrete was studied. Three aerated concrete mixes were prepared, namely, concrete containing 100% ordinary Portland cement (control sample or Type I), binary concrete made from 50% POFA (Type II), and ternary concrete containing 30% POFA and 20% PFA (Type III). It is found that the tempe...
